Comprehensive Stroke Center
Northwestern Medicine's Comprehensive Stroke Center offers comprehensive care for stroke, including advanced diagnostic imaging, multi-modal treatment and rehabilitation for patients with stroke and cerebrovascular disease.
Physician specialists at the Stroke Center have clinical and research expertise in:
The Center also has specialized stroke and neurocritical care nurses. An Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) serves as the Stroke Center Coordinator, providing specialized expertise and support for patients, families and stroke team members, as well as facilitating communication with community-based physicians and emergency department personnel.
Staffed by a team of neurologists and neurosurgeons experienced in diagnosis and management of the full spectrum of stroke—from ischemic stroke to rare cerebrovascular conditions such as moyamoya disease—the Stroke Center offers an integrated approach that incorporates treatment of cerebrovascular and any secondary cardiovascular disease that may also be affecting the patient’s health or impeding recovery.
Members of the Stroke Center team work with specialists from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) to optimize rehabilitation following stroke. RIC physicians and occupational and physical therapists evaluate each patient's needs to help determine the most appropriate plan of care after discharge.
